Don't escalate. Jokes are either funny or they're not, and largely the difference is the state of mind of the reader. And the reader's heritage and country of residence has a big effect as well--and this joke was in part poking fun at the British usage of "range," which would not usually be used in the same way in North America.

But I'm trying to understand the relationship between a horn being physically lighter and having a lighter sound. I'm not sure this relationship holds--I can think of many contrary examples. And the lightness must be the thickness of the brass--the density of common brass alloys varies little.
