Many people like the large CC tubas like the HB50, MW2165 and others not only for low range, but for overall projection. I use my old rotory MW2155 because it has a very dense, heavy, loud and clear sound suited for large ensembles. It has a similar sound to the old Kaiser Alexander tubas. I find that sound very suitible for low range work. My tuba actually has good intonation with some lipping and an alternate fingering or two. Like the Alexanders though, some will have pitch problems I have heard, but if you get one with good intonation, you have it made, however, it takes TONS of air with the .807+ graduated bore.
