Music is communication. Someone who can reach the audience and transcent the aural is a great musician. If Pat Sheridan's velocity reaches and inspires you, wonderfull. If you find some high-school kid that can't play C above the staff, but can make you cry in only four notes, you've found another great musician.
However, all the other stuff pretty much gets in the way of the message. For me, bad tone, bad time, off-the-wall pitch, all impede the message.
Therefor, making people hear you is mediocre. Making people FEEL about what you played is greatness.
