He was also a student of Arnold Jacobs, and admired the famous Chicago York tuba that Jacobs played. He first popularized the notion of getting that famous York sound by converting an otherwise worthless (to professionals) BBb carcass to a CC tuba with good valves. He still does work on the big Yorks, though the carcasses are harder to find and more expensive, and I have to say that some of my best experiences in trialing 6/4 horns have been his conversions.
