Sorry, didn't know 'crook' was a legal term. I always see a crook as someone who gets more money in a less than nice/polite/reputable/respectable way. No implications of criminal activity were meant, and I sincerely apologize if that's they way it was taken.
Thus, the statement was really meant as humorous, and i am likewise sorry if anyone was offended.
