Your points make sense Chuck, but to play devil's advocate:

some would argue that a compensating system adds stuffiness to the tone...
The dependant 5th allows me (I can't speak for others!) to play, at least the low register, in tune. Granted, having an independant 5th would allow for more alternate fingering possibilities.
