Air trouble: Have you tried moving the air more slowly while it's still under some pressure from the abdominal muscles? Since the vibration on low notes is slow, a slower air column ( still under some pressure ) will help on almost all horns. Let me qualify my statement "under pressure" by saying I mean a dynamic, not clenched, movement of the abdominal muscles. Also, try thinking of the vowel "oh" ( a very round O) while you move the air slowly, looking more for resonance than volume. Even the worst of instruments will open up if the air is matched to the register and resonance of an instrument. Hope this is more helpful than a discussion of equipment.
