The old Boosey&Hawkes method of creating a strong frosted silver plating was to plate the smooth surface. Then sandblast it. Ending with another plating. That way the "high ground" most exposed to wear was covered with a double layer of plating.
Works well on my 1967 Imperial baritone. I have strong suspicions, that this method also was used on my two 70++ years old Conn sousa. Gold and silver plated respectively.
I think there is a parallel to the engraving situation.
