I've seen a few old instruments (mostly Keefer tubas) where the engraving was obviously done AFTER plating--the recessed areas show as brass. Actually, that's probably not a bad thing, as the engraving remains very crisp to handle fine detail and the exposed brass slowly tarnishes to show the engraving more clearly against the silver background.

I suppose you could use one of those ion-exchange plating polishes (like silversmith) to deposit a thin layer of silver in the recesses--heaven knows it won't be susceptible to abrasion. Probably look okay for a good long time, after which, just use some more of same to bring it back up to color.
