I have to disagree. Rotary valves have a much shorter stroke, and therefore have the potential to be played faster. Also, everything else being equal, I find rotary valves to be quieter than piston valves. Piston valves are easier to take apart to maintain, but they require more maintenance to be kept playing well.

This from someone who replaced his rotary valve tuba with a piston valve model.
