There is no real reason to use a wood mute over a metal mute. Most of the time, a muted sound is all that is asked for as composers don't usually know that tuba players have a choice.

The wood or fiberboard, as the TrumCor is, gives a bit more mellow sound as opposed to the rattle or buzz of a metal mute. A person can normally play louder with a metal mute than with a fiberboard one.

What it really all boils down to is personal choice. If you only have money enough for 1 mute, then get the 1 that appeals to you the most. If you want a variety of sounds, then buy several and experiment. It's kind of like spending money for different mouthpieces - most people buy several, find the one or two they like the best and use them. Mutes don't, generally, cost much more and they will last a very long time.
