The one story that comes to mind is once I was contracted to play with a regional opera company and the director decided that "locals" wouldn't meet his "standards". He decided to go with some players from his college alma matter at the last minute. In the end, we were paid for the full three week run and the rehearsals we were contracted to play thanks to the AFM.
The most interesting part is that several times during the run, the orchestra crashed and burned! =P
