When I played in the Albany, NY, symphony, I was a union member. Both before and after that, I freelanced in the same area. In general, I could make more money with non-union freelance jobs, than I did per service in the union orchestra. However, the union did nothing in particular to make me either love or hate it. I belive it eventually merged with the NYC union.
