I have read a research study by organ builders about the material that organ pipes are made of. It didn't seem to make much difference, shape and aperture were more the determining factors.
A graduate study done at North Texas compared 4 Miraphone tubas (186's if memory serves as a source), 2 silver, 1 gold brass (lacquered) and one yellow brass (lacquered). The listening group (all musicians) found more difference in sound quality between the two silver horns than between the other three instruments.
What does it mean? hmmmmm.... it's your money. Buy what you like.
