I march with a King 2341 it's very uncomfortable to march with. Concerning the breath, I cheat whenever possible, like robbing a little time from half notes, etc..
I don't like doing it but it works for me. I play for a Portuguese concert/marching band when I'm availible, for one the Tuba music is closer to counter counter melody than accompaniment these composers write despite normal Tuba limitations, let alone while marching. Second the majority of the parades are religious procesionals, which means real slow, this, believe it or not, makes it even more difficult.
I read on this post of another Tubist out there inquiring about Portuguese composers, I forgot what his/her question was but whatever it was there is no comparing Portuguese music, because there is nothing quite like it. One would be hard pressed just to find religious music now a days never mind Portuguese music.
