JP Sousa award is an award that is bestowed locally, under local criteria, but it nationally recognized. The Instrumentalist supposedly has a listing of all winners compiled. Each [participating] school picks an outstanding student and gives him/her the award. IN most cases the directors choose (much like the directors awards) but some have a student voting process.
The JP Sousa award is the same as the Woody Herman and Louis Armstrong Jazz Awards, and there are some for Orchestras and Chiors as well.
