Being a confessed primitivist I have done this (and more):

My Besson 981 sorely misses a thumbring above the inner body top bow. That bow is too widely bored to make me comfortable, when the thumb is under the bow. So I took one of my trombone cleaning cloths and made an 8 around one of the body to bell stays. Works perfectly.

The 4 pistons of my Conn 40K sousa wetted my right leg constantly. I was advised to take a sock and pull over all of the bottom caps of the pistons. Works perfectly.

I wanted to hook a baritone sax harness to to my euph. Took a narrow piece of cloth. made an 8 around the narrow branch of the main tuning slide and one of its stays. Works perfectly.

And then I have used leather and bike-handle-cloth-tape on several instrument to make grips more comfortable. I tend to place these on the nickel silver reinforcements. Not on plain brass tubing because of the danger of corrosion when hand acid accumulates in cloth or leather.
