The lateral force on a rotary front bearing is most extreme on string linkages, which is probably why french horns develop play after only a decade or two. Uniball is probably much better in that respect. I don't think we're ready for rack-and-pinion yet, but maybe a miniature roller chain drive might be interesting...

One might be able to mitigate the situation by incorporating an intermediate "sacrificial" shaft and bearing, meant to be easily replaceable by the owner and coupled to the rotor shaft by means of gears or other linkage. But that would also mean an increase in mass and friction...
