It certainly seems to have been a factor in the S.F. bay area. There's nothing in downtown San Jose that can begin to compare with Davies Hall in S.F., and both the SFSO and SJSO shared time at Flint Center located at De Anza College. I don't know for certain, but my guess is that the SFSO probably far out-sold the SJSO at Flint Center, simply because the SFSO probably could afford far bigger name soloists on a more consistant basis. Yep - good management, good fund raising skills, a decent endowment, and a committment to a newer, better symphony hall - these things seem to be the key to success. Far easier said than done, I'm sure.
