Even if it is unpopular- i think it is a more realistic perspective to take. I think it would be a good idea for music (esp. performance majors) to take some econ classes. I think as professional musicians it really is up to us to build an audience, to build a following. If we want to have professional musicians who can support themselves with just our art-we need to try to learn a few lessons from other "luxury" activities, such as NFL, NBA or baseball. I am not sure what those lessons might be-but I am sure there is something to be learned. Or how about the sousa band (i don't mean when he directed the marine band, but when he had his own professional band). How did he do that successfully? What economic problems did he face? etc...
