This idea is not unlike that of pop concerts. Unfortunately, may orchestras only give 1 or 2 pop concerts a year. The leaders of these organizations feel it is their duty to "educate" the public about music they (audience members) do not like.

Wind bands, however, long ago learned to play music that Joe Sixpack (hey, that's me) will appreciate. Although wind bands are struggling somewhat to exist, they have nowhere near the issue that string orchestras do. Granted, a lot of us wind band players are only semi-professional and are happy to stay that way.

But, as the late great high school band director, Lawrence Fogelberg, once said, "The average audience listens with its foot." I.e., if you can't tap your toes to it, the audience won't enjoy it.
