It's not necessarily an either-or choice. For instance, Chester Schmitz played in a military band and then went on to a long and distinguished career in the BSO. Pat Sheridan played in a military band and is now (I believe) the only entertainer making a living with solo tuba. Don't limit yourself by thinking inside a box. Practice hard, play well, and expose yourself to criticism and review. Find out what works for you. The right college is a very good place to do that. The problem is finding the 'right' college.
