It was already mentioned that Kilton Vinyl Smith played an F tuba with the Boston Orchestra. If memory serves as a source, his predecessor also played F tuba. Both of these gentlemen had been previous bass trombonist. I got the impression that Koussevitzky thought that as the bass trombonist got less capable, he should move to the tuba chair.

A story that I was told by Arnold Jacobs: as he was finishing Curtis, Koussevitzky called Jake and asked him to join the BSO for $85 a week (Depression dollars). He totaled up his income from all of his jobs in Philly and told Koussevitzky that he was making $90 a week and would have to decline the job. Koussevitzky didn't offer to match the $90.
