Sorry if that came across as directed at you--other people were also suggesting talking to guys ca. 60 years old when there are guys over 80 who were playing small horns pre-1970--and have terrific memories about other players. Plus, of course, written or photographic sources--look at orchestral photos pre-1940 and figure out what people are playing. Ask Sam Green about Vanni.
