I use Eb as my primary instrument. I would say a big Eb can hold it's own in a bigger group. I used to play a 4/4 CC and I liked it better in a bigger group than my Eb but the Eb still does well and is a lot better in the upper register. I don't know if you will find a lot in that price range unless you find a used instrument. You may look into a big F tuba as well because the big F tubas have a pretty big sound too. I have a friend who plays a Willson F and he really likes it.

As far as Eb tubas go the Willson Eb is nice and big but also expensive. Besson has an Eb with a 19" bell that has a nice big sound. Those are the only ones I have much experience with. I know Meinl Weston makes a nice looking Eb but I have not had the chance to try one.

Good luck
