I always felt sincere sympathy for those who worked very hard to master "ear training", piano proficiency, etc. when at the same time they were trying to master their primary instruments and pass other tough core curriculum courses.

As a "nerdy" little kid with a piano in the house, an older sister who took lessons, and a big stack of music, I kinda had all of the piano stuff taken care of (at least good enough to pass a "proficiency" test)...and the "ear training" (knowing full well that I was a nerd) was self-taught writing down and learning to play "top 40" lead guitar solos and chord changes off of l.p.'s (to try to impress girls). In college, I just had to quickly learn the "proper names" of all the stuff I already knew how to hear.
