The USAF band does currently require E-6's and E-8's to attend NCO Academy and Senior NCO Academy, which means 6 to 8 weeks away from home and the band. This policy started around 1993 I think. It is THE reason I left the Air Force band in 1996. The band used to be exempt from additional schooling, for the intelligent reason that the band can't afford to be without members for that length of time. During my last years in the Airmen of Note, there was no time wehen we actually had all the members there. The Note is a very special ensemble which I felt was seriously damaged by this policy. We had subs from the Ceremonial Band, but it was double duty for them and a hardship on everyone.

I believe the Honor Guard is still exempt. I guess they're more special.
