On my Sony portable DAT deck, I use a little "Audio Buddy" preamp that provides a line output from two balanced XLR inputs. Smaller than the deck, with a level control for each input, it set me back only about $50.
Radio Shack(!) used to make a small battery-powered 4-channel stereo preamp/mixer that wasn't much larger than the Audio Buddy.
