What was amazing to me was how he cut cut through the orchestra when he thought
the piece called for it, without sounding blatty. For example, as a member of the Dal-Hi Orch. (H.S. all-city sym.), I got to play next to Mr. Vanni in a performance of "Finlandia". He played the quarter note passages (Ab, etc.) as accented staccato eighth-notes at the 'FF' level, really punching them out!
