let's say its 1400 bucks, and that they can be bought new (not seconds/blems, whatever)from a reputable source for between 2k (Jay's remembrance) and 2400 (the quoted dealer catalog price) - round it to 2200, 1400 is then 2/3 of price new. How many other horns in non-abused used condition can be had for 2/3 current price new? Answer: some can, some cannot. A used 4-banger 186 for 2500? people snap them up, cherry ones go for way more right? A used 5-banger Alex f for 4400? Folks hesitate, not because it isn't an equally good deal, but because the market for an f is much smaller than that for say a BBflat 186.

So....MY gut tells me that if Jan likes the horn when he plays it, it is not an unfair asking price. Its up to Jan to negotiate the price lower if he wants, but in my mind he shouldn't walk from the horn simply based on its asking price.
