I always get chastised for playing the tuba when I'm not supposed to in band, especially when warming up. People just can't believe I can play my big, ponderous tuba in the manner that they play their smaller, inferior instruments. I also get the amazed, stupid comments from many of my peers. I have no idea why these comments come from people who are supposedly mature. There is no reason that the tuba should gather so many jokes. However, I love the attention that little kids(e.g. percussionists) afford the 187, but they'll be suffering major hearing loss by their senior year if they can't stop sticking their heads in the bell. And yes, it does happen.
