Well, I think it depends on your definition of recording back to the computer.
If you take line out of the MD player into your sound card, it works (I can't remember now if I went through my amp first or not!) and I've burned CD's from the MD player. It just takes a while!
I think the "powers that be" are afraid someone would do something "bad" if they could get the digital signal directly into the computer.
