Unless you are 1) supremely talented, 2) extraordinarily dedicated, 3) naturally lucky, or 4) independently wealthy, don't rely on tuba playing only.

I have met a number of young musicians who are at least 'making a living' at music. Their formula includes playing their primary instrument for pay, but also includes a number of other activities.

The easiest one to bring up is doubling - for a tuba player, the logical doubling instruments are bass 'bone and string bass.

Perhaps others, who are actively 'making a living' in music can add other money making ideas to this thread.
