Most of the top jobs require an acceptable resume before you can audition. Just what is acceptable these days, I'm not completely sure about. However, this was not always true. Alot of the older guys who one big jobs did it while they were young adults. The best place to start is with local and regional symphony auditions, who don't have the same pre-audition screening process.
