As a 21 year old college student, I would advise you to audition for as many organizations as possible, however, realize that the "big" orchestras will most likely not advance a young player unless you play exceptionally well. Do audition for smaller local orchestras. For example, the Boston area has many local orchestras that are great for gaining experience as well as making a bit of money. this way you can gain the audition experience without dropping a bunch of money for an audition you have no chance at winning (NY Phil).
