I have seen a Besson from the 20's with copper pistons. It could have been done at a later time, but they were all copper, not worn through. I can only assume they were done that way on purpose. Copper is a common strike coat underneath nickel plating, but these valve had never had the nickel plating.

I'm not sure there is anything wrong with unplated pistons if they don't leak. Keep them oiled. Nickel is hard than brass, but not that much, and the insides of the casings are raw brass in any case.
