I think its necessary that teachers instil a certain amount of confidence in their students, but not lie to them about their ability. However, I don't think this is typical of most institutions. I notice this type of thing mostly in smaller schools that seem to breed the "big fish in a small pond" players. These people always weed themselves out because how can someone learn anything if they thing they know everything already. As far as teachers go, there certainly are a fair amount of hacks that have made their way into the big jobs. I can think of several examples that include a Big 12 school. Again, this is not typical.
I see the point your trying to make and I agree. Its just not as widespread as you might think.
