Even as a teenager, Mike's musicianship was phenomenal. In 1970, I sat through three rehearsals and three performances of the Berlioz Requiem and paid more attention to what he was doing than to my own singing (not the correct thing to do, but we all have our priorities). The beauty of his tone, the utter perfection of his intonation, and his ability to play effortlessly far above the staff on a BBb Miraphone were an absolute gas. On my infrequent trips to hear the ASO, I still am careful to pick programs that feature good tuba parts.
