He might be pretty well known and therefore, not an "unsung hero", but I once heard Eli Newberger (Neuberger?) in the New Eagle Jazz Band (Black Eagle?) at a Trad. Jazz festival in Sacramento, Ca. back in the late 70's. He completely blew my socks off.
