I think that the problem is in the explanation. In the process of tonguing, is the "toe", "tee", or "taa" sound produced by A) The tongue striking where the upper teeth meet the gums, OR B) The tongue pulling back from where the upper teeth meet the gums??

When you make the attack, the actual attack happens as the tongue is pulling away, not as the tongue is moving forward. That leads me to the idea that it is more important how the tongue comes off of the gums/teeth than how it gets there. That would seem to line up with what your teacher was saying. That makes sense to me, I think...
