We had three or four guys over 35.. one was 37, another was 36 and a former E-6 knocked all the way back down to E-2, in my platoon when I went through army basic. They made it through just fine despite starting out a little squishy. It was actually really nice to have some old blood in the group with us. It kept the drill sergeants honest.
It was my understanding that they calculated prior time in service towards their age limit. If you can catch them at the right moment and you had enough time in service and you can squeak past the weight requirements even if they do make you redo boot camp you'll be fine. You might also look at other branches of the military. We had an older guy that was a former Navy man too.
