I was just repeating an anecdote from a friend who had just moved to SF when the auditions were taking place. He'd gone down to SFO just to look around and seen the typewritten audition announcement, which stated VW - when he enquired they said "sure come on in and audition" -sounded a far cry from today, to even think that one could walk-in would be unheard of today. Whatever it took for Mr. Cooley to get his job, I think the REAL bottom line is much of the inspiration for two generations of tubists here in the SF Bay area from his playing came from what he did onstage - and THAT certainly wasn't just on f tuba.

We agree totally on your bottom line statement, I still think "perfect equipment" gets more press than it deserves 'round these parts....and thats at the expense of impressionable, developing musician-consumers.
