I personally have some trouble understanding that opinion. Having heard Pat Sheridan live, I can tell you that he gets a huge sound on the 983, with plenty of meat in the low end. He doesn't even use that large of a m.p. either. I had an older Besson 3 + 1 Eb tuba, with an enlarged leadpipe and a 19" bell added on later. In spite of those enlargements, the low notes are actually a tad fatter on my 983, and I think that's somewhat a matter of the design and wrap. There's a fellow in England who is replacing the 4th valve on 3 + 1 style Eb tubas with a large rotary valve (operated by the right hand thumb), and a more open wrap. Apparently, that makes a big difference on those horns. I think it's really more a matter of which horn one is ergonomically more comfortable with. I have trouble playing 3 + 1 type horns without a playing stand.
