The section has to have the same sound concept. By that, I mean their tone, articulation, volume, note length, everything. It's easy to shout out, I need more tuba. With that you'll always get "blat-your-brains-out." The hard part is figuring out why the tuba sound isn't being heard. Are they blending as a section? Do you have 10 guys with 10 different sounds? Is their staging horrible? Just because we have the big bells doesn't mean we have to be in the back you know. Notice how the drill designers for all the top corps and bands stage their tubas. Tubas should rarely go much behind the front hash and need to stay within the 35s. Tubas should also never be directly behind the bass drums. The drums cancel out the tuba sound.
