Well, you can tell them that it is not going to ruin the instrument if they do pull a slide without depressing the valve first.
On instruments that do have a bit of compression, it is easier to get the slide out if you are not working against the vacuum. It is possible that some of the people who have propagated this myth about valve depressing/slide pulling were trying to conceal the fact that the instrument they were trying to sell had very little or no compression. If instrument valves and valve casings were soft enough to be affected by less than 5 PSI, then your valves would wear out in two months or less.
