I have had a similar experience with my VMI Neptune (4098, rotary). My tuning slide was literally falling out of the horn during rehearsals! Like Tim below, I began playing some old familiar Concone and Bordogni transcriptions, looking at a tuner for each note. WOW! I found that I have a whole lot more flexibility in each note than just 50 cents! When I really focused on getting EACH AND EVERY NOTE in tune, my tone became much more pleasing, at least to my ear. There was a real step change. Also, I found that just going to a fairly large mouthpiece (PT-88) helped a lot, but that, by itself, was not enough. Now, my main tuning slide is out about 3/4" to 1", and the conductor seems fairly happy with the intonation.

Work that tuner, man, work that tuner.

Regards, Rex
