It has been my experience that most major orchestras provide some means of getting heard, whether it be an excerpt tape or the standard rejection letter: "Due to the lack of experience on your resume and the high cost of travel we advise against your attending the live audition." (or something to that effect) If asked for a tape, send an amazing one. Anything but perfection will be declined. In the case of the standard rejection letter, decide for yourself if the experience of spending 5 minutes in front of an audition committee is worth the expense of the trip.

Don't overlook the experience of auditioning for smaller or part-time professional orchestras. They rarely require a tape and almost never send rejection letters. If you make the finals, that looks good on the resume. If you win, you could gain valuable experience. After winning two such auditions, I almost never get the rejection letters (or even asked to send a tape) any more.

Hope this helps,
Paul
