That's interesting.  I usually think just the opposite.  Why would I buy a new Hirsbrunner for $17000 when I can get one that's already broken in for $2000 less.  My philosophy is that $2000 is $2000.  If a used one fits my bill, then why spend another $2000.  If a tuba is taken care of it will last a lifetime.  Why does it matter if it is used today?  If I buy a brand new tuba, someday it is going to be a used tuba.  Would you spend $2000 on a new Weril if you could get a used one for nothing?  In either the Hirsbrunner or Weril situation you are still saving yourself $2000.  $2000 is $2000.
