Obviously the horn has problems. I own a German horn, and it does play sharp, as the fundamental pitch of Miraphone tubas is A443. However, there is enough main tuning slide to bring the horn into tuning standards that are more "American." Try removing the existing slide tubes, find some .XXX bore tubing that matches this instrument, and simply add 4 inches to your fine new slide tubing. This would be a much easier alternative to a curlycue slide. If you consider this impossible, then tell the kid to sell the B&S and get a Miraphone 1295.
