Once at a lesson with Warren Deck, I played on the Meinl-Weston model 32 CC tuba he owned. This was the tuba he used while a student at the University of Michigan, then when he won the Houston Symphony audition, and for most of his audition when he won the New York Philharmonic job in 1979. I had played a number of other MW 32's, and Warren's was, for me, completely different. It had a great sound, with smooth, supple playing characteristics. It played more rounded and open than any MW 32 I'd tried. I don't believe there were any physical alterations made to the horn. He just played it, a lot. I don't know if the horn was like that when he bought it, but it was great.
